History

According to its history, the territory of present-day Dilijan was called Hovk and was part of the Varazhnounik district of the 15th historic region of Greater Armenia, Ayrarat. In the 1870s, experts conducted archaeological excavations and discovered valuable artifacts dating from the Bronze and Iron Ages.

In the Middle Ages, the domain was still a celebrated primeval forest and a summer residence for the Arsacid kings. Various Armenian sultans spent their vacations there hunting. It was these kings who built the first villages and monasteries that still stand in Dilijan today.

The Haghartsin and Goshavank monasteries were built between the 10th and 13th centuries. These sanctuaries quickly developed and served as cultural and educational centers. These buildings testify to the grandeur of Armenian architecture, particularly Haghartsin. Many other important educational and religious centers have survived in the city of Dilijan. Following Armenia's independence, it became part of the newly formed Tavush region.

Aghstev spans 20 kilometers and is situated at an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level.

According to the Köppen-Geiger classification, Dilijan has a humid continental climate with no dry season. The city's average temperatures fluctuate from 2°C in January to 22°C in August. January is therefore the coldest month and August the warmest. Moreover, July, September and October are the wettest months. Experts recommend the months of April, May, June, July, August, September and October to visit Dilijan.

Over a year, the average temperature is 4.7°C with average precipitation of 394.9mm. To avoid rain, favor July and August. There is almost no precipitation during these months. Experts even say they are very favorable for those who wish to enjoy sunshine in Dilijan.
