Garni is a rural community located in the marz of Kotayk, a central region of Armenia. This locality has much to offer travelers seeking total immersion during their stay in Armenia. From a cultural perspective, it is home to several sites well worth a visit. Like its famous temple, the community also owes its renown to its churches and monasteries, all displaying remarkable architecture.

On the nature front, Garni holds its own with picturesque landscapes and natural reserves that promise wonderful hikes leading to monasteries, churches, and fortresses.

Its geographic location near Yerevan gives Garni a prominent place in travel itineraries across Armenia and is often regarded as a day excursion from the capital.

History

Situated on easily defensible terrain within one of the Azat River's meanders, the city of Garni was occupied in the third millennium BC. In the 7th century BC, it was conquered by the king of Urartu, a highland Armenian kingdom, Argishti I. To protect his territory, this ruler fortified the city during the 3rd century BC, and it became a summer retreat for the Armenian royal Orontid and Artaxiad dynasties.

Shortly after, in the 1st century BC, Armenian king Mithridates I settled there, and the city became his last refuge before being assassinated by his adopted son. In 1386, the fortress was sacked by Timur Lenk, a powerful military commander. The 1679 earthquake subsequently devastated the region and severely damaged the Garni temple.

These structures were restored to their original states in 1975 and today form part of Garni's cultural and historical treasures. The city attracts numerous visitors eager to discover these genuine architectural gems of the past.

For tourists visiting Armenia, the city of Garni offers an engaging experience with its diverse cultural and natural sites. Garni captivates above all through its natural setting, shaped by mountains and hills. A veritable paradise for hikers, various trails allow you to enjoy this natural beauty and observe towering cliffs plunging into the Azat River. Moreover, just beside the gorges lies the entrance to a magnificent reserve blanketed in primeval forest, concealing countless treasures.

Cultural sites—temples, monasteries, churches—are equally popular in Garni. They promise discovery excursions for the curious, and are nestled within truly authentic settings. Some of Garni's temples and monasteries are, for example, within the Khosrov Forest State Reserve.

Highly touristy, Garni has all the amenities necessary to welcome travelers. You'll easily find hotels and restaurants where you can savor delicious Armenian cuisine. During a hike, you might also opt for a night in a guesthouse. Note that camping is not permitted in Khosrov Forest due to the presence of bears and other potentially dangerous wildlife. What to Do in Garni?

• Visit the Garni Temple and Fortress: This comprises a main gate, fortifications, and walls from the foundation of a two-story royal summer palace. You'll also find circular foundations of a church, a cemetery, and the celebrated Hellenistic temple. The latter is one of Armenia's most important monuments.
• Go to Machtots Hayrapet Church: Also known as Pok'r, meaning small, it is a hidden gem of Garni. It's remarkable for its intricate sculptures adorning its exterior facades.
• Enjoy Nature and Visit Garni Gorge: This easily accessible spot offers breathtaking landscapes. At the gorge's bottom flows the Azat River, a magnificent haven of peace. A short excursion into this attractive natural space is worthwhile.
• Explore the Khosrov Forest State Reserve: To reach it, take the road crossing the Azat River and climb the ridge through Garni and Goght Gorges. Entry to the reserve requires permission from the guardian. The location is a paradise for hikers. While wandering the forest, you'll stumble upon cultural and historical sites, all worthy of attention. The Havuts Tar monastery, Aghjots Vank, and Kakavaberd monastery lie deep within this reserve. It's also possible to explore Khosrov State Reserve on horseback.

Back in town, you can visit tourist stands selling local products. This is an opportunity to taste the walnuts and Gata, brioche pastries, of Garni. Otherwise, you can head to one of the city's restaurants to enjoy typical local dishes.

When to Visit?

The city of Garni has a Dfb climate according to the Köppen-Geiger classification. Precipitation is substantial even during the driest months. On average, 370mm of rain falls annually. The average temperature throughout the year is 9.1°C.

For those who love sunny days, it's best to visit between June and September. July is the warmest month, with an average maximum temperature of 28.4°C. This is therefore the best month to visit Garni.

However, tourists wishing to explore it during the dry season should favor December and January. January is in fact the driest month, with only 17mm of precipitation.

In winter, with snow, the mountains surrounding Garni become favored destinations for skiers. Vacationers need only bring their equipment to enjoy this winter sport. Otherwise, the city already has ski resorts welcoming both experts and beginners.

The city of Yerevan, Armenia's capital, receives direct flights almost daily from major European cities. Tourists must first reach this metropolis before heading to Garni. The latter is located approximately 30 kilometers east of Yerevan.

From the capital, you can request a taxi to Garni or opt for a less expensive choice and take a bus or marshrutka (shared minibus).

Renting a car in Yerevan is surely the best option and allows greater freedom during your stay. The road is fast and easily identifiable. A GPS is normally provided with the vehicle.

Once in Garni, you can explore the city and its surroundings on foot. For those interested, bicycles are available for rent.
