History

Lake Sevan is one of the world's oldest lakes and has played a central role in Armenia's recent history. During the Soviet era, its waters were extensively used for irrigation and hydroelectric power. This lowered the lake's level by nearly 20 meters over a few decades. In the 1960s, authorities became aware of ecological risks and launched measures to restore the lake, including water transfers from neighboring rivers. These efforts had significant impacts on downstream agriculture but succeeded in protecting and regulating the lake's resources. Since independence, Sevan has been at the center of efforts to restore its natural balance and preserve surrounding forests. In 2010, the lake reached its highest level since 1965, symbolizing the success of these conservation initiatives.

The Landscape of Lake Sevan

Lake Sevan is the largest body of water in Arménie and the Caucasus, as well as one of Eurasia's largest high-altitude lakes. It is located in Gegharkunik province, at nearly 2,000 meters elevation, in a mountainous basin. Its watershed covers approximately 5,000 km², representing one-sixth of Armenian territory.

The lake spans 1,242 km² and reaches depths of 100 meters, with a volume of 32.8 km³. Twenty-eight rivers flow into it, but only the Hrazdan River flows out, while 90% of water input evaporates.

Thanksto its altitude, Sevan maintains pleasant coolness even in summer. Air temperatures can reach 30°C, but breezes keep the climate temperate. Water warms to 18–20°C in July and August. In winter, the lake can freeze and the air becomes biting cold.

Exceptional Biodiversity

Fish

The Sevan trout (Salmo ischchan) is endemic but faces competition from whitefish, goldfish, and long-beaked crayfish. The bojak and winter bakhtak have disappeared. Summer bakhtak appears rarely, while the gegharkuni continues to reproduce naturally. Spawning grounds are found in oxygen-rich groundwater, between 25 and 30 meters deep. The lake's lowered levels and poaching have reduced populations.

Birds

Over 200 species make their home near the lake. The Armenian gull boasts 4,000 to 5,000 breeding pairs. During migrations, the pallid harrier and steppe eagle mingle with tufted duck and ferruginous duck. In winter, Bewick's swan, black-headed gull, and lesser white-fronted goose regularly settle on the lake.
