In 451, the Battle of Avarayr, which pitted Armenians against Sassanid Persians, struck the city hard. Despite defeat, Armenians bravely defended their Christian faith, earning the respect of the Persians.

From 885 onwards, Achtarak became the capital of the Bagratid Kingdom, unifying Armenia after centuries of division. This period brought an era of political stability to the city.

The city of Achtarak resisted the Mongol invasions of the 13th century. It was later contested between Ottoman Turks and Safavid Persians.

Integrated into the Russian Empire in the 19th century, Achtarak became an integral part of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic in the 20th century. This shift in political status left its mark on the city's history, marking a new phase in its development.
